Required Equipment:
- Lacrosse Helmet – we go with WHITE helmets; hockey helmets are not accepted by the Mass Bay League
- Shoulder Pads – hockey shoulder pads might work
- Arm Pads
- Lacrosse Gloves – hockey gloves are not allowed and don’t work out too well because of the metal thumb in a hockey glove is too restrictive for the stick handling action in lacrosse
- Lacrosse Stick: white or black head is preferred. Mesh pocket is HIGHLY recommended (not the Standard/Traditional pocket).
- Mouth Guard – yellow is recommended because the ref and coaches can see it well, other colors are acceptable. Follow molding instructions. Buy one with a strap so you can attach it to the helmet
- Cup and holder. This will probably feel more comfortable if worn over the right type of underwear or shorts. Meaning…. Compression-type shorts or brief style that has legs that go into the thigh area. Over boxers or gym shorts is a secondary choice.
- Footwear: sneakers for indoor practices (basketball type recommended; don’t wear running sneakers/running shoes); rubber molded cleats for grass and for playing on the new artificial turf fields
Optional: rib pads are options, but highly recommended for 12U and 14U
Goalie Equipment: our program provides the additional goalie equipment. Each team is issued two sets.
Where to Buy Equipment:
If you didn’t get sized and order equipment from the Commonwealth Lacrosse Company at the registration night, then, if you have the time to drive, my first recommendation is The Brine Store in Sudbury. They have the selection, knowledge to fit properly and pricing is okay (mention our program and I believe you will get a 10% discount). While the store is called The Brine Store, they sell equipment from Brine and the other manufacturers.
Sizing the helmet is key. A guideline is that when the chin straps are adjusted properly, have the player wiggle his/her head back and forth (in the ‘NO’ movement). The helmet should move a little. If it doesn’t move or moves very little, then it’s probably too tight. If it moves a lot then it is probably too big. Obviously if the helmet feels too big or small then those are your first indicators.
Here are other options:
- Commonwealth Lacrosse Company: That the catalog that was given out at registration night. You can order over the phone or it’s a sizable drive to Weymouth, MA. On page 21 of the catalog from Commonwealth Lacrosse Company is the starter package they offers. There is also a size chart on that page.
- Thunder at the Solomon Pond Mall- mention our program and I believe they will give you a 10% discount
- MVP/Decathlon, or Sports Authority in Natick, Rte. 9
- Dick’s Sporting Goods in Worcester on Lincoln St. off I-290 (see Jon Ryan
for discount coupons)
- U-Save Sports in Northborough by the Good Year tire store – mention our program and I believe they will give you a 10% discount
- Our program has some equipment for loan (on a need basis). If you would like to look into this, call Deb or Greg Mangan at 366-0612.
